USN: How long have you been a hair stylist?
MH: I have been a licensed hair stylist for 10 years.
USN: Briefly describe a typical day as a celebrity hair stylist.:
MH:- A typical day as a celebrity hair stylist means waking up early. Arrive at celebrity's home, set up and wait. Then style hair along with the make-up artist in about 50 minutes. Caravan to press junket, do touch ups. Work, work, lunch. Head to studio location for a print shoot. Do complete change on celebrity. Shoot look, do 1 more look, shoot. Wrap and leave. Head to salon, meet client for shampoo, blow-dry and trim. Grab dinner and head home!
USN:The entertainment industry is a tough business to break into, what was your big break?
MH:- I got my big break by moving to Los Angeles. I assisted a celebrity hair stylist and was also her colorist. So I custom colored wigs and hair pieces for many celebrities.
USN: What advice would you give to future stylists who'd like to break into the entertainment industry as a stylist?
MH: My advice to future stylists breaking into the industry is to move to where the industry is. I meet plenty stylists who want to break in but stay in their home town, it does not work that way. Today, Hollywood is no longer the home of major movie and television productions. So opportunities are out there
USN: Who are some of the celebrities you have worked with?:
MH: Serena and Venus Williams, Megan Good, Lady Gaga, Kelly Rowland, John Legend, Don Cheadle, Jada Pinkett-Smit... for a complete client list visit: http://www.marciahamilton.com.
USN: Describe your personal style.
MH:- I would describe my personal style Classic Edgy, for example my hair is long in the back but very short on the sides.
USN: Where do you stand when it comes to hair care versus hair styling?
MH:- I am a huge enforcer of healthy hair. I believe integrity before style. When first introduced to a client if she has a relaxer my goal is to help her grow it out and embrace her natural hair.
USN: If you could pick 3 must-haves that every USN Reader should own, (products or tools) what would they be?
MH:
1. Tancho-Wax stick
2. J Beverly Hills-Ceramic Flat Iron
3. White Sands-Phase One Nourishing Shampoo and Corrective Conditioner
USN: What are your top three tips for black hair care?
MH: My top 3 tips for black hair care are:
1. Always keep hair moisturized by deep conditioning every two weeks.
2. Avoid getting split ends by getting ends trimmed every six to eight weeks. Promise it really works.
3. Do keep excess, direct heat off hair. Try blow drying hair with a round brush before curling, instead of blow dry-flat iron-curl.
USN: What should a customer look for in a good hairdresser?
MH: A client should look for a licensed hair stylist that is progressive and listens to the client. Also a stylist who continues his or her education.
USN: What one priceless business tip could you pass on to a budding young hairdresser?
MH: A priceless tip for all hair stylists is to treat your client like a bar of gold.
